Sunday Programs This Winter

Beginning in January the Greece Museum will be hosting a special event on winter Sunday afternoons. There is no charge, but donations to support the mission of the Greece Historical Society & the operation of your museum are appreciated. The following is a list of upcoming special Sunday events scheduled so far. The Sunday programs are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.   but are subject to change.

December Events & Announcements

December 3 & 4, 2011 – Lighthouse Holiday Sale- Noon to 5 p.m.

This weekend, our friends at the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse will be featuring their annual Holiday Sale.  The lighthouse is located at 70 Lighthouse St. (just 5 miles east of the Greece Museum.)  For more information about their sale visit http://www.geneseelighthouse.org/

Sunday, December 4th – Garden Clubs Sale – 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Members of the Garden Clubs of Greece are putting their creative talents to work to decorate the Greece Historical Museum, 595 Long Pond Road, for the holiday season.  Using a variety of fresh and dried flowers and decorative accents, the gardeners will deck out the historical home to greet the community. Some of the items on display will be offered for sale. The public is welcome to attend. Also on display will be a community Christmas tree featuring original ornaments made by local businesses. The museum and museum gift shop will be open.

Sunday, December 11thCHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE – 1:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Greece Historical Society invites its members and their guests to a Christmas Open House at the Greece museum, 595 Long Pond Rd.  Come see the Greece Garden Club’s decorations throughout the house and porch, meet friends old and new, listen to musical sounds of the season, take part in the “Night Before Christmas” treasure hunt and enjoy delicious punch and refreshments, and participate in a gift basket raffle. Your Holiday Spirit grants you free admission.

Sunday, December 18th – Museum Open- 1:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Last chance before Christmas to purchase that special gift of local history at our museum gift shop!

Seabreeze Memories

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011, – 7:00 p.m.
Greece Town Hall, One Vince Tofany Blvd.

Seabreeze Memories: “The Park When you were a Kid” will be the topic of a presentation by Matthew Caulfield at the Nov 8th meeting of the Greece Historical Society. Caulfield, archivist of Seabreeze Amusement Park, will share his knowledge of the history of this, the fourth oldest park in the United States. The program will be held from 7 to 8:30 at the Greece Town Hall, One Vince Tofany Blvd. The program is open to the public and is free to Society members, donations are appreciated from others.

Native American Day

Greece Town Hall, One Vince Tofany Blvd

Featuring Veronical Reitter, Ganondagan Museum educator. Hear her stories about the life of the Seneca people. Learn about the Haudenosaunee, living in a longhouse and trade items that changed Seneca life. See a model of a longhouse, bone and antler tools, and arrowheads from Greece ancient Iroquois camp sites. FREE.

Primary Sources in Teaching & Learning

Saturday, November 12, 2011, 10:30 a.m.—1:00 p.m.
A workshop/Class at the Greece Museum, 595 Long Pond Rd.

This workshop will define the several related meanings of the term, “primary source,” and provide illustrations of the various shades of that meaning. Types of primary sources will be presented and their possible roles in teaching will be discussed. The various controversies regarding primary sources will be mentioned and audience participation will be encouraged. A wide variety of sources and their uses will be examined. Ways of locating and accessing primary source material will also be included. The format of the workshop will be a PowerPoint illustrated talk and discussion with handouts. This program is sponsored by the Rochester Regional Library Council and was made possible [in part] with funds from the Documentary Heritage Program of the New York State Archives, a program of the New York State Education Department and Archival Methods.
