Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 7:00 p.m. – Greece Town Hall, One Vince Tofany Blvd, 14612
Brian Bennett, author of three books relating to the 140th N.Y., will discuss and share images associated with the service of this local Civil War unit.
Recruited in 1862 and composed of men from across Monroe County, including Greece, its story is at the same time typical and unique among Northern regiments. By war’s end, the 140th had a well-earned reputation as an elite unit, due in large part to the key role it played at the battle of Gettysburg.
Brian Bennett has been researching the 140th New York Volunteer Infantry for over 25 years. He is the author of “Sons of Old Monroe: A Regimental History of Patrick O’Rorke’s 140th NYVI” (1991), “The Beau Ideal of a Soldier and a Gentleman: The Story of Patrick O’Rorke from Ireland to Gettysburg” (1996), and “An Unvarnished Tale: The Public and Private Civil War Writings of Porter Farley, 140th NYVI” (2007). He has also contributed articles to various Civil War magazines, including two in “The Gettysburg Magazine,” and is a book review columnist for “The Civil War Courier.”
Brian will autograph His book “An Unvarnished Tale” The Public and Private Civil War Writings of Porter Farley, 140th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry, which will be available for sale for $20.00. Chuck Baylis from the Military History Society of Rochester will also have a display of photographs and artifacts from the 140th and the Rundel Library’s, Local History Dept. will be selling Bob Marcotte’s book “Where They Fell” for $10.00 and will have information on Civil War resources at the library.
