Sons of Old Monroe: The 140th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry

Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 7:00 p.m. – Greece Town Hall, One Vince Tofany Blvd, 14612

Brian Bennett, author of three books relating to the 140th N.Y., will discuss and share images associated with the service of this local Civil War unit.

Recruited in 1862 and composed of men from across Monroe County, including Greece, its story is at the same time typical and unique among Northern regiments. By war’s end, the 140th had a well-earned reputation as an elite unit, due in large part to the key role it played at the battle of Gettysburg.

Brian Bennett has been researching the 140th New York Volunteer Infantry for over 25 years. He is the author of “Sons of Old Monroe: A Regimental History of Patrick O’Rorke’s 140th NYVI” (1991), “The Beau Ideal of a Soldier and a Gentleman: The Story of Patrick O’Rorke from Ireland to Gettysburg” (1996), and “An Unvarnished Tale: The Public and Private Civil War Writings of Porter Farley, 140th NYVI” (2007). He has also contributed articles to various Civil War magazines, including two in “The Gettysburg Magazine,” and is a book review columnist for “The Civil War Courier.”

Brian will autograph His book “An Unvarnished Tale” The Public and Private Civil War Writings of Porter Farley, 140th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry, which will be available for sale for $20.00. Chuck Baylis from the Military History Society of Rochester will also have a display of photographs and artifacts from the 140th and the Rundel Library’s, Local History Dept. will be selling Bob Marcotte’s book “Where They Fell” for $10.00 and will have information on Civil War resources at the library. As an added bonus one autographed copy of Bob Marcotte’s book “Where They Fell” will be given away to a lucky winner.

Public welcome, Greece Historical Society members FREE, a “pay as you will” donation is appreciated from others. Volunteers Needed for Strawberry Festival

It’s only February and we are already busy planning our annual strawberry & dessert tasting festival for Monday, June 18. This festival, our main fundraiser for the year, takes the work of many volunteers, from traffic control, to ticket sales, set-up & take-down, entertainment, food purchasing, and dozens of other small jobs. Last year nearly 500 of our guests enjoyed, what we considered, the Town’s best neighborhood festival. If you are willing to help us with this important fundraiser, please REPLY to this e-mail greecehistory595@gmail.com or call 585-225-7221.

Paddy Hill & Mother of Sorrows Exhibit

We take great pleasure in bringing to light the history of Read’s Corners, better known as Paddy Hill. Learn about: St. Ambrose Church founded in 1829, later renamed Our Mother of Sorrows, and the present brick church that was built in 1860. Also learn about the Irish settlers, Mother of Sorrows cemetery, Paddy Hill School, first built as a frame one room school in 1839 and the Paddy Hill Players, a theatrical group who performed for a quarter century.  We’ll explore the precarious plight of the old church, now empty and in need of a tenant or buyer who will tend the beacon on the hill that has served the neighborhood all these years.

This exhibt was also recently featured on Channel 8:

The museum is open Sundays 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. The exhibit will be open through March
